About BSF

Lummi Island residents formed BSF as a not-for-profit organization in the State of Washington during June 2009, inspiring the local community to raise more than $67,000 in a short time to support the ongoing operation of the island’s Beach Elementary School.

BSF immediately applied for non-profit status as a 501(c)(3) entity within the State of Washington. In the interim, Lummi Island Community Association (LICA) cooperated by accepting donations under its non-profit status on behalf of BSF.

BSF committed itself to support educational goals and objectives of Beach Elementary School students, faculty, staff, Parent Teacher Organization, and the Lummi Island community. You can read the BSF Mission Statement here.

BSF’s outreach:

  • Staging and promotion of fund-raising events.
  • Identifying and applying for grants that would fund current and long-term projects to stabilize educational programs and services of Beach Elementary School.
  • Advocating for legal actions that impact Beach Elementary School.
  • Researching issues related to the BSF mission, and informing the Lummi Island community of results to enable appropriate, beneficial actions and decisions.

BSF’s major capital-raising aim at accumulating sufficient, perpetual funds needed for Beach Elementary School to continue maintaining the highest level of educational programs and services, both required (e.g., curricula) and supplementary (e.g., voluntary programs).

BSF provides limited and specifically defined advocacy efforts at federal, state, and local school district levels about issues of education in general, and about Beach Elementary School directly. Prime example: The urgent need for modification of archaic state laws that define Remote and Necessary schools.
